Bird Tours Peru - extensions
Extension 1: Satipo Road ( 5/6 days)
The Satipo Road is the equivalent of the Manu road near Cusco. Combined with the main tour (the Central Highway) the total is 16 days. The second extension to Oxapampa is not yet available.
Day 0: drive-in
The drive from Huanuco after having done the Central Highway. Or coming from Lima as a tour on itself.
Day 1,2, 3, 4: Satipo Road
For these 4 days we will really explore the Satipo road camping at different elevational sites giving us the best chance of seeing as wide a diversity of species as possible.On the first morning we will begin birding the area around Satipo for upper tropical/subtropical species ; star birds here including Hairy-crested Antbird and Hazel-fronted Pygmy Tyrant. As we continue up the road increasing in altitude the forest will change into subtropical and temperate forest and the community of bird species will change accordingly. There are some very poorly known species particularly on the upper part of the road including two undescribed tapaculos, the rare Eye-ringed Thistletail and the newly described Black-spectacled Brush Finch. We will make special efforts to find all of these birds and there is the real possibility of turning up something new and exciting as this whole area is very poorly known. Nearly 300 species have so far been recorded on this underwatched road.
Day 5: back to Lima
This morning we will begin the drive back to Lima stopping along the way to look for as many of the missed and most badly wanted species as time will allow.
